Welcome to About Furoshiki

Our online class is over. Thank you for the great response. For anyone who would like to take it in September, you can email me and I will send out information in August.  I am taking the class kit offline now as we are out of stock, but I will bring it back in time for the September class.   sue@aboutfuroshiki.com.

On this site we sell instructions, patterns, materials and tools in keeping with our theme of throwing away less.

What all our products at About Furoshiki have in common is that they involve skills for a time when people re-use and re-purpose, and that would be now, right?

My favorite is the furoshiki fabric wrapping techniques because I think they represent all the best points we look for in a technique for changing up from disposable products. They are as functional and beautiful as the disposable plastics and papers they replace, and they are, if anything, less expensive.  Plus they are fun to do, like little magic tricks!

Most of what you find here will be techniques that date back to our grandmother's skill set, or earlier.  We have a sashiko patterns for home decorating, a technique for which dates back to the 1600's.  Sashiko was originally used to mend and reinforce clothing and household linens.  It didn't take women long to develop ways of adding beauty to these chores, and the designs they stitched are with us yet.  Try stitching these patterns on cloth cut from your worn out blue jeans for an authentic looking and very beautiful effect!

We also have patterns for applique and piecework using recycled cloth. Working with recycled cloth is very freeing.  Although you can still create perfectly crafted pieces, you might find your creative side released to follow its own path more frequently.  Recycled fabric comes with pre existing embellishments and challenges that naturally encourage a personal approach to every project.  We hope you have fun with the designs offered here, and take them beyond the original patterns.

Never done these techniques before? Not to worry, our directions will walk you through what you need to know, be it how to do sashiko stitching, how to prepare recycled wool fabric for your sewing project, or how do crewel stitches...
